The talk of the past few years being good ones for Japanese cinema seems to be hype over substance. The penchant to throw together disparate elements/genres/characters and a storyline that is as weird as possible with an eye on somehow winning accolades seems to take hold of more and more directors. More is not necessarily better. Consider:
1. Love Kill Kill (2004) Dir: Shinya Nishimura
a porn collector, a lesbian stalker, a pretty face involved in incest with her brother. Yes, it can either be sublime or in this case, somehow manages to be placid and mundane.
2. Bubble Fiction: Boom Or Bust (2007) Dir: Yasuo Baba
slightly more coherent, this financial commentary entertains and has a stab at educating.
